Week 6

vs Kiama (Both grades)

Another disappointing result for our boys on the weekend in both grades as we ran into a very good and efficient Kiama side on the weekend. We went into the game missing a number of regular first grade players and had a side that was little low on experience and it showed in the first quarter where we were overawed and let the running play of Kiama dictate terms. We were not accountable enough and gave them too easy passage out of the half back line and into the centre setting up straight forward opportunities for their dangerous forward line. The rain did not seem to slow them down and we were chasing most of the first half. We had a couple of opportunities but poor disposal and selfish play led to an unflattering halftime score. After the break the weather and our play improved without a great deal of indication on the scoreboard, but we were definitely harder at the contest and were more accountable. In the last quarter our boys really stood up and outscored Kiama comfortably with hard, strong running and efficient play in the forward line indicative of the style of play we had come to expect from earlier performances. Very good contributions from Tim Green, Travis Brown and Clint Maynard in the backline as well as good work in the midfield from Jonathon Wilson, Justin Larkins, Liam Carruthers and Jace Southwell. Chris Weller finished with 3 goals and Dale Richardson performed strongly at times. Overall a satisfactory performance with the team we had but it would have been more encouraging to see the level of committment shown in the last quarter displayed throughout the game.

In Reserve Grade once again the lack of numbers had an effect on the playing group (this time maybe too much experience was the issue). We have come up against most of the better sides in the draw so far and Kiama showed that they are up there with them, with a free flowing, running game that was difficult to counter. The scoreline showed that we were able to go forward as well but the extra pace and class of the Kiama players showed through. Great contributions from all over the ground with Cameron Cullen and Craig Godfrey strong in the middle, Mark Kinnear and Mark McDougall strong up front and Steve Wall and Jarrod Alkemade kept it tight in the backline.

Congratulations to Simon Levy, Andrew Newman and Jace Southwell on making the SCAFL Representative Side to take on North Coast in Coffs Harbour on the weekend.

Congratulations to Mark "Doogs" McDougall who played his 100th game for the Club on the weekend.

Reserve Grade will be looking forward to travelling down to Ulladulla on Sunday and looking to register its first win for the season. First Grade will be taking on Wollondilly in two weeks time on a Sunday up at Bargo.

The social calendar is complete and will be attached to next week's email. There are a couple of events coming up first:

Friday night at the Aussie Hotel is a players function please be there before 1900.

Sunday after the game in Ulladulla the awards are at the Husky Pub with a kick-on function at Halfy's for those interested.

Week 5

At Bomaderry (First Grade)

With a really strong side named, we went into Saturday's game against Bomaderry with a good feeling and confident of coming out on top of our traditional rivals for the first time in a few years. A strong first quarter showed the Tigers that the we were a different side than they have faced in recent history and they were in for a fight. The Tigers showed more composure in the second and third quarters and took a small lead into the final quarter. With the aid of a moderate breeze we were in a position to win the match but lacked the confidence and clean skills to finish the games off.
In the end another frustrating and disappointing loss but I think that our record is not a fair indication of where we are as a Club and it will not be long before results start going our way. Simon Levy was everywhere and inspirational, Cameron Cullen played a great role on Andrew Mazey, Greg Wallace was strong, Travis Brown was very good, Justin Larkins played well in his return and Paul Serafin and Andrew Newman played hard and straight all day.

We host Kiama this weekend in both grades and are looking forward to the challenge of facing the undefeated leaders. It will be a good indicator of how far we have progressed as a team with nothing less than a big improvement from our first round result acceptable. Reserve Grade will be looking to regroup after a close loss from their last game two weeks ago.

Week 4

Vs Norths (Both Grades)

We performed well but fell agonizingly short on the weekend with both First and Reserve Grade going down by small margins on a windy day at Tom Smith Oval. The endeavour, committment and discipline shown by all players was fantastic but we need to have more composure and use the football better especially in tight situations if we are to win these close games.

First grade started strongly against Norths and it was evident from the start we were in for a close and hard fought contest. With Norths kicking to the favoured end we played strongly but a couple of quick goals to the Tigers gave them a slight advantage. In the second quarter we had a lot of the play and should have capitalised more but were a little inefficient and missed some golden opportunities to take a good lead into halftime. In the third we again battled hard and put ourselves in a good position leading into the final quarter but Norths finished too strong and got a couple early in the final quarter and effectively shut the game down after taking the lead. Best players were Andrew Newman, Michael Hutchesson, Clint Maynard, Tim Green, Liam Carruthers and Damien Wallace.

Reserve Grade were gallant in defeat against Norths in a very close tussle that produced passages of very exciting play at times. The Demon's backline was well lead by Trevor Bennett and young Ned Orchard played well to ruck most of the day. James Inglish was strong on the ball and as always Lee Wright got a lot of the footy and used it very effectively. Scott McCurdy was a good target and a couple fo great snaps by Ray Drysdale ensured a very close contest that went the wrong way in the end. Reserve Grade are not far away from a win and no doubt will find a breakthrough soon.

A big game this week against traditional rivals Bomaderry and our boys will be fired up to get one on the Tigers. If we continue playing the type of footy we have been and improve our composure and effectiveness the close results will fall our way in the weeks to come.

Week 3

At Port Kembla (First Grade)

It was the most frustrating and disappointing day I have had involved with footy as we went down to Port by a point on Sat. Thanks to the guys that we there and to those that let me know they couldn't be there. There were a couple of things that let us down on Sat: commitment, discipline, a lackluster second quarter and a lack of composure in the second half when we had chance to put the game beyond doubt.

We need to improve our discipline and commitment as a club if we are to move ahead and this will start with a set of team rules that will be discussed before training on Thu (go straight to the rooms at 1715, training on the field will commence around 1745). If you can't be at training and have any inputs to this please contact BK ( brett.kelly@ssds.com.au ). This is being lead by the leadership group and is part of us becoming a more disciplined and professional club.

Congratulations to Andrew Newman, Tim Green, Travis Brown, Liam Carruthers, Grant Hoffmann, Luke Rogers, Dale Richardson, Simon Levy, Michael Hutchesson, Justin Larkins and Damien Wallace whom have been selected in the training squad Squad for the SCAFL Representative Side that will play in the June long weekend. Training commences on 20th May at Norths and 27th May at Kiama at 1745 for both nights. If you cannot make it to the training session(s) please contact Neville Hickmott (Sticks) on 0413448434.

We have a two big games this weekend and need as many numbers as possible to get the results we're after. Norths have had a couple of good wins in both grades over the last couple of weeks and we need to be at the top of our game to come away with the points in both grades. Let me know ASAP if you are not available please.

Week 2

Vs Uni of Wollongong (Reserve Grade)
Vs Wollondilly (First Grade)

Fantastic performance from First Grade on the weekend with the largest win in a few years beating Wollondilly 21.9 135 to 2.7 19. A great team effort making it difficult to pick best players but special mention must go to the half back line of Newy, Greeny and Browny who I thought were superb on Sat and backed up well by Cranky, Lunny, Clint and Finn. Great work on the ball from Blue, Hutch, Vickers, Hoff, Jace and everyone else who had some time there and great and efficient work in front of the sticks from Dale, Chris and Emu especially highlighted our really pleasing performance. Good to see Hoff, Cranky, Clint and Finn back this week and we welcome Simon back this week (he'll have some work to do to force his way into the side).

Ressies had a tough day at the office with Uni proving to be too quick and big for us but the promising sign is that we had close to a full line up with only 3 guys having to back up for 1st Grade. Great efforts everywhere with Phil, Bails, Halfy, Jake, Goof and Pommy standing out. Good to see Big Wal, Doogs and Pommy back and I think this is going to be a strong year in Ressies as we find some very good players competing for first grade spots in the team throughout the year.

This week Ressies have a bye and First Grade is away to Port Kembla. They are tough at home and we will need to play in a similar style to last Sat to come away with the points. TO BE CONSIDERED FOR SELECTION THIS WEEK YOU MUST HAVE PAID REGO, it is only $50, no more excuses. Next week I will name and shame those that haven't paid or spoken to the Club about it.

Let's continue the great numbers at training (24 again last night) but remember that those that train are more likely to get selected as the team is named on Thu night after training. Don't forget the Friday night raffles at the Aussie as well.

Attached is a map to Port Kembla's ground. Any questions, queries or doubtful points give us a bell or drop us a line.

Week 1

At Nowra (Reserve Grade)
At Kiama (First Grade)

Whilst the results did not go our way on the weekend I think there were definitely more positives than negatives to come out of both performances. A couple of highlights I want to mention were the performance of the more inexperienced players on Friday night (Rhubarb, Phil, Jarrod and Quinny especially), the backline on Saturday (Greeny, Luke Rogers, Newy, Jace, Bails, Lunny, Callum, Cheese, Jake, Browny) and the number of people to both games (players and supporters alike).

A special thanks to all the people that helped out with the Aussie on Friday night and those that ran water, goals, boundary, the sideline and other elements that all come together during the games to help out. It is those extra efforts that we need to make this club grow stronger and look more professional.

I will not be at training tomorrow and neither will Ty. Hutch and BK will take the session and as discussed at the games there is no training this Thursday (23rd) as there is no game this weekend.

Next week training is Tue/Thu at normal times and the games are at home on Sat againt Uni (Res) and Wollondilly (First). Please let me know if you are not available for either game. The teams will be named at training on Thu and barring any injuries or unforseen circumstances will be as read for the games on the weekend.

Thanks again for the efforts over the weekend and let's put together an improved performance on May 2nd for our first home game, and come away with wins in both grades.
